Discovering Altar Ego at Duesy’s Tavern in Gruene, Texas

Today, I was introduced to the music of Altar Ego, a new and upcoming Texas band performing at Duesy’s Tavern in historic Gruene. There is something special about discovering a band for the first time, especially when they bring familiar songs to life with their own energy and style.

Altar Ego plays the rock hits we know and love, with a strong focus on music from the 1990s. Their set also reaches into the 1980s and 2000s, creating a lively mix of pop rock, grunge, hard rock and Top 40 favorites. It is the kind of variety that offers something for almost everyone, whether you grew up during those decades or simply appreciate great rock music.

Cover bands have the wonderful ability to take us back in time. A familiar guitar riff or chorus can instantly transport us to another place, a teenage bedroom, a road trip with friends or a night spent singing along at a favorite concert. Altar Ego embraces that nostalgia while bringing a fresh presence to the stage.

Gruene has long been known for its rich musical spirit, and venues such as Duesy’s Tavern provide a welcoming place for emerging bands to share their sound and connect with new audiences. It was exciting to experience Altar Ego at this stage of their journey and to see another local band helping to keep live rock music alive in the Texas Hill Country.

If you enjoy the unforgettable rock sounds of the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s, Altar Ego is a band worth following. You can find them on Facebook and Instagram to learn more about the band and keep up with their upcoming performances.

I am looking forward to seeing and hearing where their musical journey takes them next.

A little more about Duesy’s

Duesy’s Tavern brings a lively, modern energy to Gruene while still feeling like a relaxed Texas neighborhood gathering place. Formerly known as The Villa, the venue was renamed Duesy’s Tavern in July 2026 as part of a fresh new chapter. The name “Duesy” means something unusually good, memorable, or one of a kind—a fitting description for a place that combines sports, music, food, and Hill Country hospitality.

Inside, fourteen televisions and an upgraded audiovisual system make the tavern a popular destination for watching sports. Yet Duesy’s is much more than a sports bar. Live music fills the venue every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, while open-mic nights, music bingo, and trivia encourage guests to join in the fun. Pool tables, darts, cornhole, Golden Tee, and other games add to its easygoing atmosphere.

Visitors can settle in with a cold beer, a glass of wine, or a freshly mixed cocktail while enjoying Southern comfort food from Tish’s kitchen. Philly cheesesteaks, wings, macaroni and cheese, and other homestyle favorites make the tavern an inviting place to spend an entire evening rather than simply stopping for one drink.

Located at 1190 Gruene Road, just a short distance from the heart of Historic Gruene, Duesy’s Tavern represents the newer side of this much-loved Texas community. Gruene may be famous for its nineteenth-century buildings and legendary dance hall, but places like Duesy’s show that its story is still being written. It is a place where local musicians find an audience, sports fans cheer together, families and friends gather, and visitors can experience the friendly, spirited personality of the Texas Hill Country.
